Summer heatwaves pose a serious risk to dogs and cats, especially when traveling or on daily outings. Following the advice ofEnpa and veterinarians can prevent heat stroke and organize transfers pet friendly insecurity.

Why heat and animals are a risky combination

Dogs and cats don't sweat like we do: they lose heat through panting and through their footpads. This makes them vulnerable to high humidity, poor ventilation, and high temperatures. Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs), puppies, seniors, overweight animals, and those with heart or respiratory conditions are most at risk.

Signs of heat stroke

  • Intense panting, hypersalivation, very red tongue
  • Weakness, staggering, disorientation
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, pale or very red mucous membranes
  • High body temperature, to the point of collapse

In the presence of these symptoms act now and contact your vet.

What to do immediately in case of hyperthermia

  • Move your pet to the shade or a cool, ventilated area.
  • Cool gradually: wet the body with fresh water (not iced), apply damp cloths to neck, armpits and inner thighs
  • Offer small amounts of water, never force drinking
  • Avoid direct ice and alcohol on skin or pads
  • Call the vet and reach the clinic with moderate air conditioning

Walks and activities

  • Logout at dawn or in the evening, avoiding the hottest hours
  • Prefer shaded routes, with frequent stops and water always available
  • Reduce games and sports; no running or cycling in the sun.
  • Check the asphalt: if you can't hold the back of your hand for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your paws.

By car, train and ferry

  • Never leave Dogs or cats in the car, even with the windows open: the passenger compartment overheats quickly
  • Ensure continuous ventilation, sunshades on the windows, stops every 2 hours for water and refreshments
  • Always carry water and Folding bowl; choose shaded parking areas and pet-friendly rest areas
  • On ferries or trains, check the rules and spaces for animals in advance; choose air-conditioned cabins/areas.

Water, food and sunscreen

  • Always have fresh water available; at home use several bowls or a fountain
  • Light and digestible meals, divided into small portions
  • Protect hairless areas (nose, ears, abdomen) with specific sunscreen for animals high protection
  • Black-coated dogs accumulate more heat; white dogs are at risk of sunburn; avoid extreme clipping that exposes the skin.

Paws and hot surfaces

  • Asphalt, sand, and stone can burn pads: use grass or protective surfaces when necessary.
  • After the walk, rinse and dry the paws well

Parasites and foxtails

  • Apply pesticide regular against fleas, ticks and sandflies
  • During outings, check the ears, interdigital spaces and armpits for foxtails.
  • Brush your dog when you come back to remove seeds and debris

If you see a dog locked in a car

  • Quickly assess the animal's condition and environment
  • Call 112 or the local police indicating the location, license plate and conditions observed
  • Remain on site until authorities arrive; document the situation if possible.

Drastic interventions on the car involve risks and responsibilities: follow the instructions of the authorities and your veterinarian.

Summer travel kit for pets

  • Water, collapsible bowl and cooling mat
  • Shade cloth, hand fan or mini portable fan
  • Antiparasitic, sunscreen for animals, wipes
  • Leash, harness, waste bags and blanket
  • Veterinarian contact information and health documents
