If you're traveling with a dog, cat, or ferret, here's what you need to enter and travel within the EU and beyond, stress-free and safely.

Documents and requirements for the EU

For non-commercial travel of dogs, cats and ferrets Regulations (EU) Nos. 576/2013 and 577/2013 apply between Member States. The following are mandatory:

  • Microchip ISO 11784/11785 compliant (or legible tattoo applied before July 3, 2011). The number must be shown on the passport.
  • European Pet Passport, issued by a veterinarian authorized by the ASL, in standard format, also in English. It contains identifying data, vaccinations, visits and anti-parasitic treatments.
  • Rabies vaccination Valid: The first immunization becomes valid after 21 days; booster shots given within the expiration date maintain continuity without a waiting period.

The movement is considered non-commercial when the animal accompanies the owner or a delegate and is not intended for transfer or sale.

Age limits and exemptions

  • Under 12 weeks: generally not allowed to enter Member States.
  • 12 16-weeks: Allowed only if the destination country accepts vaccinated but not yet fully protected animals (with a declaration from the owner). Many countries, including Italy, do not accept this exemption: always check in advance.

Treatment against echinococcus

For the dogs headed in Finland, Ireland, Malta and in non-EU countries such as Norway e UK, treatment against it is mandatory Echinococcus multilocularis Performed by a veterinarian between 24 and 120 hours before arrival (EU Delegated Regulation No. 1152/2011). The treatment must be recorded in the passport.

Travel to and from non-EU countries

  • To non-EU countries: rules may include additional certifications, serological tests or quarantinePlease contact the destination country's embassy/consulate before booking.
  • Return to the EU from countries/territories not listed by the EU: may be required rabies antibody titer = 0,5 IU/ml, performed in an authorized laboratory at least 30 days after vaccination and 3 months before entry.
  • UK (Great Britain): This is a third-party country. Entry from the EU/EEA requires a microchip, a valid rabies vaccine, and, for dogs, treatment for echinococcus; the EU passport issued in the Union is generally accepted by UK authorities.
