Urbino, Candelara, and Gradara: dog-friendly weekends

Panoramic view of the Ducal Palace of Urbino

Between Renaissance art, medieval villages and hills, here is a 2-day itinerary in the Brands designed for those who travel with their dog: Urbino, Candelara and gradara, with truly unique stops and services dog friendly.

How to organize the weekend

Ideal time: fall and winter to experience the atmosphere of Le Candele a Candelara, spring to hike through the hills without the heat. A two-day program, with a slow pace and plenty of outdoor stops suitable for Fido.

  • Always keep a leash with you (and wear a muzzle, if required).
  • Water, travel bowl, hygienic bags and blanket/raincoat.
  • Prefer less crowded hours and outdoor seating for lunches and breaks.

Day 1: Urbino with the dog

What to see at a paw's pace

  • Piazza della Repubblica and its network of sloping alleys: Renaissance views perfect for a leisurely stroll.
  • Belvedere at the Fortress/Rocca Albornoz (Resistance Park): large green spaces and views of the city, dogs allowed on a leash.
  • The Doge's Palace's facades and exteriors are stunning for photos. The interiors are generally not accessible to dogs; it's best to alternate or opt for the outdoor spaces.
  • Urbino Explorer (tourist train): a convenient way to see the city without tiring your dog; dogs are generally allowed on a leash; always check the latest regulations.

Park at the Borgo Mercatale and go back up towards the centre following the pedestrian paths. For lunch try the grows leafy with local cheeses (Casciotta di Urbino DOP) in the premises with outdoor tables.

Day 2: Candelara and Gradara

Candelara between lights and countryside

In December the village lights up with Candles in Candelara 2026: markets and illuminated outdoor streets. Dogs are welcome on a leash; choose the least crowded hours and wear a clearly visible harness. Off-season, hike the paths through olive groves and hills with views of Pesaro and the Adriatic.

Dog-friendly Gradara

  • Orange Flag medieval village: shops and alleys with bowls of water outside in several establishments.
  • Ronda walkways: panoramic walk along the walls, generally accessible to dogs on a leash.
  • Rocca di Gradara: The interior is generally not accessible to dogs (sometimes exceptions apply for small dogs in carriers). Prefer the outdoor spaces and viewpoints; if you wish to visit the interior, plan to alternate entrances.
  • Lovers' Path and Monte delle Bugie: easy nature trails with views of the valley, ideal for dogs.

At the table don't miss the Bigol, handmade spaghetti with meat or mushroom sauce, and local wines. Choose restaurants with outdoor seating or that allow dogs inside.

Where to eat and sleep with your dog

Choose pet-friendly farmhouses and B&Bs with fenced gardens in the countryside between Urbino and Gradara. Always let us know you'll be bringing your dog when booking and check for any additional charges. For meals, opt for establishments with outdoor spaces or dedicated rooms: many provide bowls and water.

Route and distances

  • Urbino ? Candelara: approximately 35 km, 50 minutes.
  • Candelara ? Gradara: approximately 15 km, 25 minutes.
  • Avoid the restricted traffic zones in historic centers; walk around once you've parked.

Useful information and rules

Local regulations and access to monuments/events may vary: always check the official websites of the municipalities or Pro Loco tourist information centers before departure. Bring a muzzle (it may be required on tourist vehicles), keep your dog on a leash, and respect green spaces.
