Responsible possession to prevent abandonment

Responsible possession to prevent abandonment

The spread of culture of responsible ownership it is an essential element in the fight against stray dogs. Almost one in two Italian families lives with a domestico animals and more than one in three with a dog or cat. The relationship with pets, however, in many cases is based on improvisation and emotion; in common thought the belief prevails that everyone can be able to handle a dog, regardless of knowledge regarding this animal species and its ethological characteristics. The positive increase in sensitivity towards animals recorded in recent decades has only partially gone hand in hand with the awareness of the need to acquire information and knowledge about animal rights and on the duties of those who live in the company of a pet. Living with a dog represents a great opportunity to improve the quality of your life; in fact, a dog can: help children and adolescents to grow in a balanced and responsible way, improving their ability to socialize and promoting a sense of belonging and family aggregation; stimulate the relationship with the outside world and nature; mitigate, in certain situations, the sense of social or moral loneliness. However, the relationship with the dog is not intuitive: sometimes people tend to "humanize" their dog, unconsciously causing behavioral problems and states of suffering, other times they tend to approach it as of the many objects that fill their life, a toy or a machine, without taking into account his ethological needs and his rights as a sentient being. The future owner, asking the veterinary doctor for advice, must inform himself: about the physiological and ethological needs of the dogs, also based on the size and aptitude of the breed, focusing on knowledge to arrive at responsible ownership; on the regulatory, ethical and civil coexistence obligations that derive from owning a dog; on the correct management of the dog, also regarding its reproductive activity. Every owner must: - know the legal obligations: - obligation to have your dog microchipped by a veterinary doctor and simultaneously registered in the canine registry; - obligation to provide your animal with a passport (dog, cat or ferret) if you intend to cross national borders; - obligation to wear a suitable muzzle for dogs not kept on a leash when they are in the streets or in other places open to the public; - obligation to wear a muzzle and leash for dogs taken in public places and on public means of transport; - obligation to collect waste from pavements and streets and to this end always equip oneself with the necessary equipment. carry out careful management of the reproductive life of your animal, so as not to increase the number of abandonments caused by unwanted and difficult to place litters. We must never forget that the fate of many puppies risks being the kennel, the street, hunger, disease, mistreatment, death. Often, even the placement of the puppies with relatives and friends cannot be taken for granted, in fact there is a risk that foster care turns into abandonment.
