Matera and Basilicata with the Dog

Matera and Basilicata with the Dog

Come to Matera with your dog to visit one of the jewels of the area with your four-legged friend Basilicata.

Listed by UNESCO among the World Heritage Sites, indicated by Lonely Planet as a Best in Travel 2018 location and declared European Capital of Culture 2019, Matera is a destination worth seeing, especially in the company of your four-legged friend, given that it is a truly pet-friendly city!

If you want to undertake this journey we advise you to do it in spring or autumn, as in summer the temperatures rise dramatically and walking with your dog could be quite annoying.

Made up of two districts, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, divided by Civita, Matera is a city that invites you to walk and slow down. Losing yourself among the streets and caves carved into the rock will in fact be the best way to get to know it. In any case we recommend you to see it Cave House to discover how people lived inside the stones in the past; there Church of Santa Maria de Idris (to enjoy the best view of the city); a walk among the authentic shops of via San Biagio, via delle Beccerie and via Ridola.

Matera will win you over with its timeless charm that makes it look like a nativity scene in every respect!

Walking lovers will be spoiled for choice. You can start by going through the Gravina, or the large canyon on which the city stands. Moving from Matera, the ideal destinations for trekking are Park of the Murgia Materana dotted with 150 rock churches, the Pollino National Park between Basilicata and Calabria and the Lucanian Dolomites

If you want to get to know Basilicata better we also recommend stopping at the Monte San Biagio where the famous statue of the Christ Redeemer or Cracow, the evocative ghost town which since 1963, the year in which it was definitively abandoned by its inhabitants, has been populated only by nature. To visit the village of Craco, however, you will have to request a special permit from the Municipality, equip yourself with a helmet and take part in one of the numerous guided tours.

However, if you visit Basilicata in the summer you can also include stops at the seaside in your program. On the Ionian coast a Policoro (headquarters of the WWF Policoro Heracleia), a Metaponto (where to find interesting finds from Magna Graecia) or a They avoid Jonico. On the Mediterranean coast, however, don't get lost Maratea

In any case we must warn you that our four-legged friends cannot bathe freely everywhere, therefore it is good practice to inquire in advance at the individual bathing establishments.
